Understanding Food Certifications

USDA Organic is the official organic certification from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They have a great explanation on their website to help you fully understand what it means. The short version prohibits substances, such as synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides in food, due to their effects on human health and the environment.
Non-GMO means a product was grown/produced without genetic engineering and its ingredients are not derived from GMO ingredients. These certifications come from the The Non-GMO Project.
Gluten-Free certification is an easy-to-identify labeling of safe, gluten-free products for consumers. This certification helps people with sensitivities to gluten easily identify safe foods to eat. The certification comes from the Gluten-Free Certification Organization.
Kosher certification means a food has been produced under the supervision of a rabbi to verify the ingredients and facility adhere to Kosher law. There are multiple organizations that offer Kosher certification. Some of these include OU Kosher, KOF-K Kosher, and OK Kosher.
